Restore data from a USB hard drive
Note: We recommend you do not format the drive.
Connecting your USB Hard Drive with USB 2.0 Interface
- Desktop USB user: If your drive comes with a power supply connect the power supply to the drive and the AC power cable and plug it into a power outlet. The green power LED should be illuminated.
- Connect the USB cable to the USB port on your computer. The USB cable and port are usually identified by "USB" or the USB symbol:
- Connect the other end of the USB cable to the drive and turn the drive on. The blue power LED should be illuminated.
- The Windows® 2000, Me and XP operating systems will recognize the new hardware and configure accordingly.
- Verify that the drive can be seen in the ‘My Computer’ option of the Windows Start menu; if not, check all cable connections to the drive and reboot the computer.
Common Troubleshooting Questions
- Have you tried attaching the drive to a different USB socket?
- Have you tried another computer?
- Is the USB connection on you computer USB2? (It may be USB1 for very old machines)
- Is the drive letter that was assigned to the USB drive conflicting with an existing mapping on their computer?
- Have you tried attaching an additional power supply?
