West Midlands police could be the latest service to have suffered a breach of
data security following the loss of a memory stick.
The Press Association reports that local news publications claim a four-gigabyte memory stick has been misplaced by the police force.
Such allegations are supported by a Home Office spokesperson, who told the newswire that the government has been informed of the
data security mishap.
However, officials have refused to give information in detail to the press organisation.
A spokesperson for West Midlands police told the Press Association: "We are conducting searches in an attempt to recover the lost item.
"We will not comment in relation to the contents of that memory stick."
It is believed that the information may have included details of suspected terrorists currently under investigation by the police.
Meanwhile, the NHS has recently issued an apology after its own breach of
data security saw a memory stick containing patient records for hundreds of mentally ill individuals found on a street in Barnard Castle in the north-east.
