Virtualisation conflicts 'can be addressed'

Conflicts between virtual systems and cloud-based networks can now be addressed, meaning companies are able to accommodate both forms of data management in their IT infrastructure, it has been claimed.

Lori MacVittie wrote in a post for ZD Net that some firms mistakenly believe virtualisation and cloud computing are incompatible technologies. However, this is not the case and firms could benefit from improved data storage capacity, flexibility and data recovery by embracing them.

She noted: "Virtual machine efficiency is important because it affects virtual machine density - that is, the number of virtual machines that can effectively be running on a given hardware platform."

Elsewhere, building society Nationwide recently announced it had made cost savings of £8 million per annum by investing in server virtualisation.

The move enabled the firm to consolidate its server stock from 500 machines to just 42 at its UK data centres, resulting in large-scale savings in terms of energy to run and cool its IT infrastructure.
