UK firms 'underestimate business disruption'

Power blackouts could make UK businesses come to a standstill within four years, research claims.

Future power shortages could dramatically affect IT systems and many business are not prepared, the report by the DMW Group says.

"The shortage of power generation capacity is predicted to cause power interruptions, which will bring down their IT systems, forcing many businesses to grind to a halt," group director Simon Williams warns companies.

A ten-point green IT plan by DMW, an IT and technical specialist, includes a disaster recovery plan with advice such as switching off non-critical systems and using 'cloud' providers to share capacity across power grids.

Reducing power consumption is not only cheaper but will avoid disruption to business services, the group claims.

Companies are currently underestimating the size of the problem, Mr Williams adds.

In related news, there have been calls for the firm that lost a memory stick containing details of UK offenders and prisoners to be stripped of all its government contracts.

Chairman of the home affairs select committee Keith Vaz says: "This firm obviously has some serious procedural failures and therefore should not hold any contracts for any government work."ADNFCR-1851-ID-18775339-ADNFCR
