UK firms switch to online backup

Up to a fifth (22 per cent) of UK firms are now using online backup solutions to protect their valuable information, it has been revealed.

Kayleigh Bateman wrote in an article for CRN that research conducted by IT support firm Connect has shown that UK businesses are now moving away from physical tape backup to more reliable virtual alternatives.

Furthermore, the study showed that a further 20 per cent of firms plan to take up online backup within the next three years.

Mark MacGregor, chief executive of Connect, commented: "These research findings suggest that the tipping point for online backup has been reached and we expect tape users to be in a minority within three years."

Meanwhile, Computer Weekly recently reported that companies which fund staff training and technology are more likely to weather the coming recession.

It noted that while 30 per cent of small to medium-sized UK businesses are expected to fail in 2009, firms are three times more likely to do so if they do not have a comprehensive disaster recovery programme in place.
