Storage space 'being utilised badly'

Businesses across the UK are being urged to address a growing problem of storage under-utilisation.

CRN.com has reported that by not managing data efficiently, companies are suffering from slower response speeds in their networks and are having to invest in more capacity.

However, by having too great a capacity for storage, files can often become fragmented and corrupt, further limiting a business' ability to handle its own information.

Simon Piff, IDC storage research program director, told the website: "Personally I think it's 20 to 30 per cent [under-utilisation], but there aren't any hard statistics because people don't want to look foolish and admit they made a mistake."

Meanwhile, Russell Olsen recently wrote in his blog for SearchWinIT that firms could increase their data management efficiency significantly by investing in data capacity planning software.

He noted that this type of program monitors the whereabouts of data and organises its placement on servers to maximise efficiency and storage.
