SMBs 'not preparing for disaster'

Category: Data Destruction

4 January, 2010

Small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) throughout the UK are failing to put in place adequate data recovery planning to be prepared for a national crisis, it has been stated.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) report almost half (45 per cent) of UK SMBs do not have a comprehensive disaster recovery plan should a crisis befall them.

Furthermore, it noted 80 per cent of businesses that are affected by a major incident are forced to close within the next 18 months.

Biba technical services manager Steve Foulsham commented: "There have been slight improvements since our previous research in 2006 but we still have concerns that businesses are still not adequately protected."

Elsewhere, CTO Edge recently reported step-by-step guidelines should be created that outline the responsibilities of staff and departments for each crisis.

In this way, the publication noted, companies are able to decide which disasters will have the biggest impact on business continuity and ensure these issues are addressed first.
