Server virtualisation saves Nationwide £8m

Nationwide has announced the installation of server virtualisation technology throughout its IT infrastructure could save the firm up to £8 million a year.

Through consolidation, the company has been able to create up to 12 virtual servers on every physical server at its data centres, meaning it has been able to reduce its original server stock of 500 down to just 42 machines.

A spokesperson for Nationwide commented: "This reduction has not only saved space within the data centre but has also significantly contributed to a decreased carbon footprint through a reduction in power and air conditioning usage."

Elsewhere, Dana Gardner, principal analyst at Interarbor Solutions, recently said in his blog for IT Director that data storage virtualisation could offer some significant disk management benefits to businesses across the UK.

He claimed many firms are at present only utilising up to 20 per cent of server space and as such, they could be prime candidates for storage virtualisation.
