Productivity damaged 'by IT illiteracy'

Category: Data compliance

10 November, 2008

IT illiteracy is costing the UK workforce 13.25 million hours a week, a study has revealed, while a lack of technology skills may also have consequences for the data compliance procedures of firms.

According to City & Guilds, 59 per cent of companies rely on self-trained staff when it comes to IT dilemmas, while 5.3 million UK workers are losing two-and-a-half hours a week dealing with such problems.

Furthermore, over a third of employees say that they have failed to complete a task in time because of their lack of computer knowledge, an admission which could hinder the business practices of firms and lead to client dissatisfaction.

"In many companies, IT issues are passed on to existing staff in an attempt to keep costs down. However, without proper training, novices can end up costing companies far more in terms of productivity levels," warns Ken Gaines, product manager for IT User qualifications at the organisation.
