People 'should have learnt by now about online scams'

It is disappointing that so many people continue to be the victim of only scams and phishing attacks, one data security expert has stated.
Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, said it would have been nice for people to have learnt that
data recovery costs and financial burdens placed on businesses and individuals due to fraud from scams could be avoided, especially given the fact that these kind of fraudsters have been around for years now.
He commented: "We all use computers now, so these criminal terms such as phishing need to be learnt by everybody. It's not just a technological issue, phishing is now as big a problem as any other crime that takes place."
According to the Office of Fair Trading, February is the government department's 2010 Scams Awareness Month and as such, it has highlighted the fact that two million people responded to a scam of some sort in the last 12 months, with almost half (49 per cent) claiming they lost money as a result.
Five per cent of these victims claimed to have lost more than £5,000 to fraud.
