North Wales police to upgrade disaster recovery

The North Wales police email infrastructure has been outsourced to undergo an upgrade that will include a disaster recovery platform, it has been revealed.

A contract has been signed with the UK subsidiary of Unisys Corporation to manage and maintain the force's email system.

The current Exchange 2003 platform will be upgraded to a 2007 one to add further disaster recovery capabilities to the current provision of the Welsh force.

Rather than maintaining the email system and inbox, the police IT department can spend more time on new technology to aid the police in their duty, claims Unisys.

"Our officers are increasingly using BlackBerry devices to access line-of-business applications and email in the field, so we need to know we can rely on an effective and fully operational system around the clock," says information management director of the North Wales police Geoff Bradley.

The force currently has 1,600 police officers and 900 support staff.

Unisys, a technology services and solutions company, is also to host a managed email service from Reston, Virginia, in its Centre of Excellence.ADNFCR-1851-ID-18771480-ADNFCR
