Multi-protocol storage 'not as responsive as consolidated systems'

Data storage systems which use multiple protocols to manage data are not as responsive as consolidated data storage networks, it has been claimed.

Search Storage has reported that while multi-protocol storage arrays can offer cost savings for businesses, consolidation of systems allows for greater adaptability and reliability.

As a result, while many firms are presently embracing multi-protocol systems there is a growing trend for consolidation in data management in order to improve data security during the economic downturn.

Jeff Boles, senior analyst and director of validation services at Taneja Group, told the website: "As long as you can serve your I/O needs from a unified pool of storage, it can serve all of your storage needs very well."

Meanwhile, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) recently warned NHS officials that the organisation must improve its data storage and data security protocols in face of a number of recent high-profile information losses.

The ICO wrote to four NHS trusts regarding recent incidents and warned that data protection for these institutions must become a top priority.
