Mid-sized firms 'face data storage demand'

More medium-sized companies are facing rapid growth in their
data storage obligations, it has been observed.
In 2004, Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) found that 39 per cent of companies were faced with
data storage needs of one terabyte or less.
However, that proportion now stands at nine per cent, while
data storage demands in excess of 10 TB are now seen by 42 per cent of companies.
ESG analyst Mary Johnston Turner says: "This situation is driving strong demand for a number of information management technologies, including networked storage, digital archiving and data reduction."
With IT budgets under inspection, the organisation adds that network efficiency is also coming under scrutiny as managers look for the best return on their investment.
Power and cooling efficiency gains, as well as technologies such as virtualisation, are among the areas of focus for many IT managers, ESG concludes.
ESG technical director Brian Garrett is due to appear at the upcoming Storage Decisions conference to address how to assess the performance of
data storage systems using relevant metrics for each given business.
