Manual data handling 'has high risk of error'

Companies which use manual spreadsheets to handle data are at a high risk of error, it has emerged.

News.com.au has reported that businesses should invest in automated data management and recovery software in order to minimise the risk of human error causing untold damage to a firm at a later date.

Seamus Byrne wrote in an article for the website that spreadsheets can grow rapidly and before an individual is aware they become too unwieldy, leading to mistakes creeping into business practices.

"It could be weeks or months before the error is noticed and when errors finally start to emerge it may be impossible to uncover where the original mistake took place," commented David Perks, general manager of business solutions at Brennan, an ICT consultancy.

Meanwhile, Ihotdesk recently reported that improvements in online backup and virtual server technologies now mean that IT automation speeds are increasing.

The website noted that more efficient data handling can now be brought about with less human interference needed to store and recover data.
