The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) wants the power to fine businesses up to ten per cent of their revenue for breaching
data protection regulations, it has been reported.
Such a figure reflects the amount that the Financial Services Authority can fine firms for breaking sector regulations, Information Age reports.
Commenting on the proposed move, Paula Barrett, head of the data protection team at law firm Eversheds, says: "It is in line with the general sense of wanting to protect consumers from businesses abusing their position."
Furthermore, there are concerns that advanced technology may lead to "a greater ability to capture data and maintain a profile about an individual", she adds.
In related news, the Mail on Sunday reported that 11 ministers who have broken
data protection laws could face fines of up to £5,000.
Deputy information commissioner David Smith, responsible for
data protection at the ICO, said that he found the newspaper's results disappointing.
