Laptops 'should not be used to backup data'

Laptop computers should not be used to store backed up data, it has been claimed.

William Pound, senior director of international operations at Absolute Software, told SC Magazine that laptop computers are excellent for working on the go but all information stored upon them should be backed up to a separate location

Furthermore, he argued that the device itself should not be a store for other data as its mobility means it can be easily lost or stolen and hard drive data recovery can be more difficult.

Mr Pound said: "Laptops are a tool used to do business, but they do blur into our personal lives as we are also likely to keep personal information on them."

He noted that many people store a lot of personal information on their laptops and that this can be a dangerous practice, especially if the device gets lost or stolen.

Meanwhile, in related news, nebusiness recently reported that only six per cent of businesses which suffer a major incidence of data loss survive in the long term.
