Data compliance efforts may be obstructed by the rapid growth in information that many companies have to store, it has been suggested.
Research conducted by Forrester indicates that a fifth of all expenditure on data centres is currently spent on keeping pace with information growth.
Noel Yuhanna, principal analyst at Forrester, says: "An archival system becomes critical when you need to access archived information in response to a legal summons."
The commentator adds that "the value of archiving grows considerably as it becomes easier to access the archived data".
Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of those surveyed also said that the majority of their information is stored on Tier 1 equipment - which Forrester notes is typically more expensive than long-term archiving capacity.
In a recent edition of its periodical Forrester Wave report, the analyst noted that
data compliance is among the driving forces currently behind the uptake of data leak prevention services among businesses.
