ICO 'should wield financial power'

Category: Data compliance

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) should use new powers in order to get strict on enterprises which breach data protection principles.

Such powers - which include a financial penalty for reckless, deliberate or serious breaches - may restore the public's confidence when it comes to data handling, urges Computer Weekly.

Furthermore, the levels of fines need to be high enough and potentially match those that the Financial Services Authority can impose on firms which breach rules in its sector, it continues.

And while such fines may make a dent in the profits of groups, a breach could also make a chip in its client base and professional reputation, consequences which may lead firms to address their data security policies.

"Traditionally cast in the role of quasi-data security officers, many IT professionals will be all too familiar with the frustrations of trying to establish an organisational culture of keeping data safe," the resource adds.

It was recently reported that there will be a BNP data protection investigation after personal details of its members were posted online.ADNFCR-1851-ID-18892382-ADNFCR
