Health trust loses details of 6,000 people

NHS Central Lancashire health trust has lost the personal details of 6,360 prisoners and ex-prisoners.

The BBC has reported that the incident took place on December 30th last year when a USB memory stick was misplaced.

Information stored on the device had been encrypted therefore it is unlikely that anyone finding the memory stick will be able to use it. However, this incident highlights the need for stronger data security in many government-run organisations.

Trust chief executive Joe Rafferty said: "There was a failure in the system which led to this incident happening and we have taken steps to make sure this doesn't happen again."

Meanwhile, Hindu Business Lines recently reported that incidents such as this can have dire and long-lasting effects for businesses should confidential information be leaked or lost.

The publication stated that data loss can lead to a loss of reputation, falling revenue and, in some instances, the failure of a business.
