Green IT for data storage

Data storage energy consumption can be reduced with certain software, with some vendors claiming they are able to reduce a firm's energy consumption by as much as 50 per cent, a report has noted.

Total data centre energy consumption could also be cut by 25 per cent if businesses looked for ways to make their data centre greener, SDA India reported.

Hardware power and cooling requirements are the source of many energy problems concerning a data centre, the resource said. With less hardware to administer for data storage, businesses could also save labour and maintenance costs.

While this could be of assistance to firms during the recession, large organisations looking to remain competitive and attractive to potential customers and investors could find that green data storage supports this business goal.

"De-duplication software, however, can reduce or eliminate duplicated data along with the need for all the storage hardware to hold it. Using software is a great approach to greening your IT effort," the website stated.

Companies need to make sure that data deduplication technology is compatible with current data management systems, ZD Net Asia reported.
