Green ICT 'requires investment'

Investment in green technologies by governments is needed before companies will invest themselves in these areas, it has been claimed.
Simon Mingay, research vice-president for lead sustainability and organisation strategies at Gartner, said
data recovery projects that embrace green IT will be very limited until there is sufficient investment in the area to make these plans viable.
He commented: "There's a chicken and egg situation here - [ICT companies] are not going to put significant investment in until there are projects; until countries, local authorities and cities start coming up with projects, progress will be slow."
Mr Mingay added progress is therefore likely to be slow until a breakthrough agreement is made regarding green IT responsibilities.
According to Greentech Media, the number of venture capital investment deals in green technologies in 2009 exceeded 2008's total as entrepreneurs and venture firms look to the green tech sector to help lead the economy back to health.
