Green data storage 'reliant on efficiency'
Category: Data management

Companies looking to improve their green
data storage credentials have been urged to ensure drives are organised efficiently in order to reduce power usage.
George Crump wrote in his blog for Information Week that green data storage is reliant on the use of as little energy as possible and therefore storage drives need to be regularly organised to save data which is most commonly used close together, in order that as little movement is needed in the drive itself to access the data.
He noted also that the amount of idle time for drives should be maximised to produce the best savings, therefore, data placement should be a top priority for businesses looking to reduce power usage in data centres.
In related news, Research and Markets recently reported that green storage has become the latest business buzzword and many data backup providers are now developing environmentally friendly solutions in order to help companies reduce their global carbon footprint.
