Encryption procedures 'can improve security'

Category: Data management

26 January, 2009

The proper use of encryption software and protocols can help boost a company's data security, it has been argued.

Ulf Mattsson, chief technical officer at Protegrity, recently stated that some of the basic lessons to learn when implementing data security can dramatically increase the efficiency of encryption in avoiding data loss incidents.

He noted that access to keys should be limited, making it more difficult to unencrypt information and access to management functions should require multiple authentication.

In addition, Mr Mattsson noted that secure key backup should be in place to protect against corruption to original key files.

And in related news, Heather Clancy of Entrepreneur.com recently argued that 45 per cent of firms are currently evaluating their data encryption procedures in order to improve data security.

She noted that any incident of data loss in the current economic climate could result in a company's future being put at stake.
