Firms can help to limit the number of data loss incidents by training staff effectively in the use of data recovery software and having proper disaster recovery programmes in place, it has been claimed.

Michael Gough, head of information assurance for the public sector, told SC Magazine that by investing in staff, companies can reap the rewards of better efficiency, higher retention rates and faster, more confident recovery in the event of a crisis.

He added that companies should also look to make staff aware of procedures regarding data encryption and the transfer of data, as it is imperative that company information is sent to the right location and in the proper format.

Meanwhile, IT portal Web Wereld recently reported that a company's own employees can pose the greatest threat to a business' ongoing data security.

The website stated that the misplacing of laptops and the installation of outside programs on to computers can lead to serious instances of data loss, which were totally avoidable.
