Voice over internet protocol (IP) and IP telephony are known to help with data backup and
disaster recovery (DR) but businesses must not forget that these applications need protecting themselves, it has been said.
Speaking to SearchCIO-Midmarket.com, Greg Schulz, founder of The StorageIO Group, stated that wherever such applications are being hosted from and over whatever networks, VOIP and IP technology need to be included in protection plans.
"It's similar to the notion of virtualisation. Virtualisation can be used for consolidating servers, consolidating storage and networks. But also, virtualisation can be used for enabling business continuity and
DR," he asserted.
Protecting business systems should not just be about data but also about safeguarding switches, routers, servers and the physical network.
The importance of protecting applications should also be highlighted to employees working remotely on their own PCs.
A recent Gartner study noted that many businesses expect this working practice to increase next year.
