Deduplication 'requires backup'

Businesses have been advised that
data deduplication on its own can result in a less than secure data management model.
Chris Poelker wrote in his blog for Computerworld that companies could be running the risk of deleting duplicated data that could otherwise bail them out in the event of a crisis.
He noted: "An enterprise-class data protection solution should be able to recover from multiple failures. After all, this may be the only backup copy of your data."
Mr Poelker added deduplication can play a key role in reducing data storage and management costs. However, it is important to ensure that the ability to carry out
data recovery is not adversely affected.
Elsewhere, Server Watch recently reported businesses could improve their likelihood of effective data recovery by investing in server deduplication technology.
The publication claimed efficiency can be improved for data recovery, archiving and backup and all-round data management performance when businesses embrace deduplication.
