Data security duties to be shared

VeriSign and ICANN are to share duties for the securitisation of domain name system security extensions (DNSSEC).

Although the organisations have suggested different approaches for ways to protect internet data security, it has now emerged that both organisations will work together on DNSSEC.

VeriSign will be responsible for the root signing key while ICANN will have control over the key-signing key.

However, both firms are expected to work closely with each other on cryptographic and operational issues, ZD Net reports.

President and chief executive officer of ICANN Paul Twomey said: "There will of course need to be consultations with the internet technical community as the testing and implementation plans are developed."

He added that the steps that have been taken are "very important" for all internet users and that the organisation will be working closely with all participants in this latest security initiative, designed to bring security to the root zone of the internet.
