Data protection 'a key business responsibility'

Companies have been advised that maintaining the confidentiality of their data is a key responsibility they must not ignore.
Marcus Alldrick, head of information protection and continuity at Lloyd's of London, told Computer Weekly that limiting data loss and leakage should be a top priority for all companies and by not taking steps to do so they run the risk of embarrassment or even legal action.
He commented: "Unless organisations take on responsibility for protecting information then they will get prescribed legislation to keep them in check. Every organisation needs to look at leakage channels."
By investing in data encryption technology, Mr Alldrick noted that serious risks to
data security can be avoided and a tighter rein can be held on who has access to business records and files.
Meanwhile, Alastair Molyneux, business development manager at Kroll Ontrack UK, recently commented that the majority of laptop drives which the company sees are not encrypted and it is therefore prudent for those firms which have not invested in this technology to do so.
