Data management guidelines 'must not be loose'

Employees must not be given too much scope within
data management guidance, it has been suggested by an industry professional.
Ian Fraser, marketing manager for the Institute of Risk Management, asserts that
data management advice should be balanced and practical.
But he warns against allowing too much flexibility for the workforce to contravene such
data protection principles.
"In terms of reducing risk the top priorities are to have workable processes to prevent misuse of data," he comments.
"The risks need to be identified and then managed," Mr Fraser continues.
He adds that this can range from issuing guidance to more extreme measures such as disabling memory card slots on computers.
If measures are too wide in scope, however, he warns that they may be rendered irrelevant in real terms.
The Institute of Risk Management is a professional body which concerns itself with disseminating education and training on data handling principles.
