The number people affected by instances of data losses around the world is set to increase in 2009, it has been argued.

The Irish Times has reported that last year were 92 million reported cases of data loss around the world.

However, 190 million people have been forecast to be affected this year due to a continued blase attitude evident in some companies and individuals, the newspaper claimed.

Mike Daughton, partner with KPMG's business performance and IT advisory in Dublin, said: "Data loss poses a threat to all companies and can have a significant impact on brand, reputation and customer trust across all sectors and different types of businesses."

And in related news, request for data recovery have risen tenfold in the last 12 months, according to Kroll Ontrack.

Furthermore, Robert Bloomquist, principal data recovery engineer at the firm, warned that over the coming year this figure looks set to rise even further.
