Disaster recovery (DR) at Rossendale Borough Council has been made more efficient and is part of an IT infrastructure overhaul that has led to predictions of cost savings reaching £352,000, it has been said.
Earlier this year, the local authority consolidated its data centre and server capacity with total cost ownership being the main driver, Computing noted.
Head of infrastructure services and IT at the council Andrew Buckle said having virtual servers at its
DR site means revenue can be better utilised.
Further plans to upgrade its IT include replacing its local area network switching infrastructure with gigabit Ethernet equipment, the online publication noted.
"We pay for what we store rather than follow the traditional
DR model in which you bring your own servers to the remote site," Mr Buckle explained.
Local authorities have been urged by central government to reduce their carbon footprints in order to help the UK reduce its carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.
