Wiltshire county council has lost the bank details and personal information of more than 1,300 local residents.
The information was being sent to the council's head offices in Salisbury as part of the consolidation of five local council bodies in the area, unfortunately, while in the post, the envelope ripped and the data stick containing the information fell out.
Council chief executive Keith Robinson said: "We very much regret the loss of this data and I am apologising to all those covered by the data. We have clear procedures for sending data and on this occasion they were not followed."
As a result of this poor
data protection, 1,385 people have now been left open to the possibility of identity theft and fraud.
In related news, IT portal Web Wereld recently reported that negligent staff are the number one threat to data security for businesses.
The website noted that 78 per cent of all data breaches come as a result of human error.
