Research carried out by Chadwick Martin Bailey (CMB) has revealed 24 per cent of IT professionals do not know what cloud computing is.
The study showed that when asked to describe cloud computing, many professionals were unable to give an accurate description, while a significant proportion confused the technology with Software-as-a-Service or hosted exchange systems, while some felt it was a kind of outsourcing.
"With so many big players like Microsoft, EMC and even Google putting heavy investments into the value of the cloud, the confusion will go away and the value proposition will become clear," commented Don Ryan, managing director of CMB's technology practice.
Elsewhere, Steve Reynolds, chairman of the Mobile Data Association, recently said improved scalability and larger data storage capacity make cloud computing solutions the "natural progression" for IT infrastructure in the UK in the years ahead.
He noted
data recovery, flexibility and accessibility can all be boosted in the cloud model.
