Cloud uptake 'still slow'

The uptake of cloud-based data management systems is being held back by software vendors unwilling to give up lucrative upfront setup fees for firms, it has been argued.

Steve Garnett, chairman of salesforce.com for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said that it is the "old" computer industry that does not want businesses to embrace cloud computing, despite the many benefits that this type of data management can bring.

These advantages include increased data availability, lower maintenance costs and increased data storage capacity, as files are saved in the ether of the cloud rather than on specific business servers.

He commented: "They want people to still be buying servers and software maintenance contracts, paying for complex upgrades and employing consultants to come in and fix the upgrade for them."

According to David Bradshaw, research manager at global market intelligence firm IDC, the current economic downturn is prompting more firms to look into the financial benefits of cloud computing.
