Cloud replication 'is not backup'

Category: Data Archiving

The replication of data within a cloud network should not be classed as backing up files, it has been argued.

"Mr. Backup" W Curtis Preston wrote in his blog for Ajax World Magazine that while keeping multiple copies of data in more than one location is good practice, data recovery professionals would always advise having a dedicated backup system to ensure that in an emergency filers can be recovered quickly.

He noted: "Good backup is much more than mere data protection: Backup must manage data, not just protect it. No basic storage technology will eliminate a real backup solution."

Elsewhere, Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, recently said many passwords are predictable, with nine out ten often containing either just numerals or just letters.

Therefore, it is important for companies to hammer home the need to make passwords as secure as possible in order to avoid any instances of lost data or breaches in security.
