Companies wishing to stay ahead of their competitors have been advised to invest in cloud computing systems as the technology is set to take off during the next decade, it has been claimed.

IT industry analyst Gartner has said that businesses should look to implement these systems within the next 12 months if they wish to stay up to date and has predicted that the technology will become widespread in industry within ten years.

Mark Raskino, vice-president at Gartner, noted: "Mark those parts of your portfolio that are already helping to explore cloud - perhaps software-as-a-service business applications, web-based office applications or web-delivered laptop backup."

Meanwhile, Computer Weekly recently warned that companies should prepare for the worst in order to ensure they have a robust disaster recovery plan in place in case of an emergency.

The magazine noted that 30 per cent of small to medium-sized enterprises have been predicted to fail in 2009, but noted that those which planed more effectively ahead were in a better position to survive.
