Availability of data 'is key'

Category: Data management

Companies need to ensure that they are getting the optimum level of availability from their information handling centres, it has been alleged.

Dan Kusnetzky wrote in his blog for ZDNet that optimum efficiencies should be maintained balancing availability and running costs in order to give companies the best return on their investments in data management.

He stated that firms which typically receive levels of availability between 95 per cent and 99 per cent will see between 18.25 days and 3.65 days of downtime at data handling centres each year.

Mr Kusnetzky claimed that this was a good position for businesses as increasing this figure to above 99 per cent will typically cost a great deal of money in system upgrades and maintenance costs.

And in related news, Mario Apicella, storage adviser for InfoWorld, recently noted that datastreams around the world are growing faster than ever and many data management programs are now reaching the limit of what they can handle.
