How it works

NetApp systems store data using Data ONTAP and a file system named WAFL (Write Anywhere File Layer). A noteworthy feature of the NetApp system is "snapshot" technology, which allows the user to go "back in time" to recover deleted or overwritten files without having to restore a backup. Organisations using snapshots create a retention policy, determining how long they want to keep the snapshot.

Once snapshots are purged, the related ability to recover deleted files without restoring a full backup is lost. Using the Ontrack Data Recovery toolset specially developed for Data ONTAP, our engineers can locate purged snapshots and essentially "turn back the clock" on a NetApp system and restore the data to its last snapshot state. The data is then returned to our customers in a new storage device.
