What we do

We encrypt your recovered data free of charge (except home user service customers)before returning it to you.

For more information about this service see our encryption FAQs below. If you have any other questions, please call us on 0800 243 996.

What is encryption?

Encryption is the process of transforming data into a form that can only be accessed by the intended recipient. The recipient of the encrypted data must have access to the correct decryption key (password) which will convert the data back into its original form.

Why is encryption needed?

  • Recovered data might be sensitive, personal or proprietary.
  • To safeguard against accidental loss or the data getting into the wrong hands.
  • Peace of mind.

How the encryption process works:

  • We receive the faulty drive/media.
  • We recover the data using our renowned expertise.
  • We encrypt the recovered data.
  • We return the recovered data to you on a securely encrypted external USB drive and email you a unique password.

What kind of Encryption do we use?

We use AES 256 bit encryption. AES stands for Advanced Encryption Standard which provides high-level encryption, being selected by NIST as a Federal Information Processing Standard in November 2001 (FIPS-197 - PDF)

In June 2003 the U.S. Government (NSA) announced that AES is secure enough to protect classified information up to the TOP SECRET level, the highest security level available at this time.

Encryption FAQs

Who has access to the encryption service?

All recovered data is encrypted (except Home User Service).

Is there a charge for encrypting my data?

No. The encryption service is provided free of charge on all data recoveries(except Home User Service).

How do I access my data?

Easy to follow instructions are provided by email together with your password. The instructions are also saved on the USB drive.

For further help or assistance, please call us on 0800 243 996.

How do I decrypt my recovered data?

Your data is available in three simple steps:

  1. We provide you with a password by email
  2. You receive your encrypted data on a USB drive
  3. Key in the supplied password at the prompt. Your recovered data is now accessible

Where is my password?

We send your password to you via email at the same time as we courier your drive back to you.

Can the encryption be removed from the USB drive?

We would recommend that you do not try to remove the encryption. Once you have extracted all the required data just keep the USB drive in a safe place in case you need to access this data again. If you want to use the USB drive like normal once you have extracted all the data, you could format it and continue using it like any other USB drive.

Can I access my data more then once?

Yes, just follow the instructions to re-mount the encrypted container.

The USB drive is making a ticking sound and Windows is not finding it.

This is normally caused because the USB drive is not getting enough power from the USB port on your computer; make sure the extra USB power cable is also attached.

I’ve lost my password, what do I do now?

We keep a secure record of all passwords created. If you lose or forget your password we can re-send the details to the address we have associated with your job number. Please note - we will not give these out over the phone.
