A UK council has suffered a data security breach which resulted in the loss of the personal care records of around 40 children, it has been revealed.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has confirmed that Stoke-on-Trent City Council lost an unencrypted USB drive detailing sensitive information of children in care, including court reports.
A member of the public discovered the device in the area of Hanley in the city and returned it to the council.
Sally Anne-Poole, enforcement group manager at the ICO, said: "When handling sensitive personal information, particularly information relating to the care of vulnerable children, it is important that authorities ensure the necessary measures are in place to protect this information."
Ms Anne-Poole added that the local authority would not be required to pay a fine as the breach was committed before this punishment was introduced in April.
